Questions

Is there an AI law in Canada?

Canada has no general AI statute; the proposed Artificial Intelligence and Data Act died in January 2025. AI products are still governed by privacy law, the Competition Act, consumer protection, human rights and employment law, and sector rules. Our Canadian AI Law Tracker shows where each rule stands.

Which documents does an AI startup need first?

Usually IP assignments so the company owns its code, prompts and models; AI product terms on inputs, outputs and training; a privacy policy that matches your data flows; and a SaaS agreement or terms of service around them. Enterprise customers often add a DPA and an AI addendum.

Do we have to tell users our product uses AI?

Often yes, in practice. Quebec requires notice of decisions based only on automated processing, Ontario requires AI disclosure in some job postings, the EU AI Act has transparency duties, and a chatbot that hides it can mislead. A plain notice is the safe default.

How does the tool decide what to show first?

Points where a mistake tends to cost most, such as agents acting for users, training on customer data and decisions about people, are listed first. It’s a starting order for reading, not a legal assessment of your product.

Is this tool legal advice?

No. It points to the rules and documents that commonly apply to products like yours, with a guide for each. A lawyer can tell you how they apply to your product.
