Questions

Is this a trademark search?

No. Loop only looks at the meaning of the words in relation to what you sell. It can’t see existing trademarks, business names or brands already in use, and a similar earlier mark is often the bigger risk. A proper search checks those.

Is this legal advice?

No. Loop is an AI assistant, not a lawyer. It gives general information about how names of a given kind are usually treated under Canada’s Trademarks Act, and it can be wrong. It doesn’t say whether your name is registrable or safe to use.

What makes a name distinctive?

Invented words, and real words with no connection to what you sell, are usually the strongest. Names that hint at the product without describing it are often workable. Names that plainly describe the goods or services, a quality of them, or where they come from can be refused under section 12(1)(b) of the Trademarks Act, though evidence that customers know the name can sometimes help.

Is what I type saved?

Not by us. The name and description are sent to Anthropic, our AI provider, to write the answer, which stores them in the United States and may keep them for up to 30 days, or longer in limited cases. Our privacy policy has the details.

What does a trademark search and filing cost?

With For Founders Law, trademark search and filing starts at $920 plus HST for the base scope on its page, with government filing fees charged at cost. The fee is fixed and agreed in writing before we begin.
